Now that Kraft-Heinz has announced its relocation of the popular Oreo cookie lines from Chicago to Mexico, Donald Trump has the company in his crosshairs.
As H.J. Heinz finishes their acquisition of Chicago-based Kraft, forming the Kraft-Heinz Corporation, the snack-making behemoth announced more than 2,500 jobs will be eliminated to avoid duplication in efforts. This included the shuttering of the Chicago plant focused on making the Oreo cookies to Mexico, sparking outrage from the businessman-turned-presidential candidate.
“I’m never eating Oreos again,” the Republican candidate said, adding that if he found some made in the United States he would eat those. Which may be easier than anticipated.
According to Mondelez International, the manufacturer of Orero cookies and a subsidiary of Kraft-Heinz, said it was not shutting down the plant but realigning the plant’s operations and shifting old production lines with newer ones. The number of jobs lost from the shift will be around 600 of the 1,200 that currently work in the Chicago plan, according to Laurie Guzzinati, a Mondelez representative. The Chicago location will stay open in the streamlined fashion.
Guzzinati told reporters that the move will save Kraft-Heinz about $46 million because of labor costs after discussions with union representatives.
So, Trump may still get his American-made Oreo cookies, but he may have to check each package before buying them.
