“The Rhythm and the Blues” film to highlight Chicago history, talent

Chicago will be the location this spring for a new, homegrown feature film, The Rhythm and the Blues.  Set in the 1960s and 70s, the movie is based on a true story of a Mississippi born family of blues musicians trying to make it in the Windy City.

Darryl Pitts, producing partner for the movie, says he plans to hire a substantial number of local actors and crew. They’ll work beside globally known blues musicians Guy Davis and Sugar Blue—and with several Hollywood stars including Leon, known for portraying music performers in  movies like The Temptations and The Five Heartbeats.  

“Our film tells a local story with a large supporting cast. It has a historical presence rooted in Chicago, with music this city is known by, all around the world,” Pitts said. “Our production will be a breakout opportunity for new acting talent in Chicago.” Pitts grew up on the South Side of Chicago and has spent most of his life here, logging a 20-year career in TV and film. “Blockbuster movies may bring millions of dollars into the city, but don’t offer our talented local people much chance to participate. The Rhythm and the Blues will reach into diverse communities to offer skilled jobs both in front of and behind the camera.” 

Supporters of The Rhythm and the Blues will gather Thursday, March 12, 2015 from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Exact Publicity, 161 W. Harrison Street, Chicago, IL 60605. Co-sponsors include  Real Men Charities; Anthony’s Own, Cupcakes and Cocktails, Edible Bliss, Ellie’s Cafe and Sweet Berries. 

A surprise celebrity guest will greet fans. Live blues music will feature the Chicago based blues singer Larry Taylor, whose life forms the basis for the film.
