The Orland Fire Protection District annual Kid’s Fire & Life Safety Camp is here again! This year it will run from July 14th-17th.
Our camp is made possible due to the assistance from the Orland Fire Foundation and is dedicated to exposing school aged children to fire & Life safety lessons dealing with potential hazards around their homes and schools along with several life lessons that are also important.
The camp is designed to be fun, entertaining and educational; while providing the campers with the knowledge to keep themselves out of harm’s way. The participants have lectures and lessons each day, followed by hands on opportunities to actively participate in exercises designed to reinforce what they have been taught.
We are thrilled to announce The Injury Prevention Team at Advocate Children’s Hospital. Alix McNulty, the injury prevention specialist, will proudly presents Bicycle Safety, Poison Prevention and the ‘Berry’ Unsafe House this year
We are also very excited to have an author out to our camp this year! Her name is Nancy Flowers and she will be speaking to the kids about bullying. The effects of bullying and being bullied can last a lifetime. Bullying can consist of any action that is used to hurt another child repeatedly and without cause. Therefore, a special presentation will be given to the children.
Our very own firefighters will be presenting a hands on first-aid session as well. Some of the topics that they will learn about will be: CPR & AED, ambulance show and tell, make your own first aid kit, and choking.
Laura, from Bear Paddle Swim School, will be presenting water safety to the children again this year. We all know how important it is to be around water. It draws the young and old and is found everywhere; the bathtub, the toilet, sinks, the backyard, buckets, swimming pools, ponds, rivers and lakes and has hidden dangers. Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among children ages 1-4 and most commonly occurs in swimming pools. The children will hear about the importance about being around water.
K-9 comfort dogs from Lutheran Church Charities will be back this year to talk about pet safety and get the chance to pet and hang out with the comfort dogs.
Gordon Bowe, from Operation Lifesaver, will be back again to discuss the importance of Train Safety! It has hidden dangers that all pedestrians need to be made aware of, especially children, who don’t think about these hazards. Operation Lifesaver is working to change people’s behavior around railroad tracks and crossings.
Jean, from the Nutrition and Diabetes Counseling Center for Palos Hospital, will be speaking on the topic of nutrition and the importance of eating well and staying healthy.
Finally, a topic that can never be talked about enough, Stranger Danger. Jennifer Kickert will be here to talk to the children about having the knowledge and strategies they will need to protect themselves in dangerous situations. Cook County SWAT will also be here to show their gear and vehicle.
Registration will be opening soon. Please check our website for this information. Orland residents will be given first choice, after June 30th it will be open to the out of district children.
