Chicago, IL – Cook County Commissioner Elizabeth “Liz” Doody Gorman successfully sponsored a new ordinance amendment cracking down on large trucks and recreational vehicles parking on residential streets. The commissioner’s effort was in response to concerns raised by the LaGrange Highlands residential community regarding the excessive parking of large vehicles, especially commercial trucks on their residential streets. The LaGrange Highlands is an unincorporated residential community located immediately south of the Village of LaGrange and west of the City of Countryside in Lyons Township.
Commissioner Gorman and her staff worked closely with Cook County’s Zoning & Building Department, State’s Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office to carefully craft the substitute ordinance amendment to the Cook County Vehicle Code which will apply parking restrictions to Cook County’s unincorporated areas.
The ordinance limits large trucks and large recreational vehicles more than 22 feet in length from parking “for a longer period than is necessary for the reasonably or expeditious loading or unloading of such vehicle… but in no case longer than two (2) hours.”
“This ordinance amendment to the Cook County Vehicle Code finally brings parking relief to Cook County residents in our unincorporated areas. Like most municipalities, extended residential parking of large trucks and large recreational vehicles is not allowed. This amendment not only tackles these parking abuses but it will also improve the quality of life for our residents,” stated Commissioner Gorman.
The ordinance covers all unincorporated areas of Cook County and took effect immediately upon adoption and approval by the Cook County Board of Commissioners at today’s board meeting.
Commissioner Elizabeth “Liz” Doody Gorman, Republican from Orland Park, represents Cook County’s suburban 17th District. She has been a strong advocate for tax reform, fiscal responsibility, and budget and operational efficiencies. Commissioner Gorman has also worked hard for greater transparency throughout Cook County government and for making the Forest Preserve District a national leader in the areas of recreation, restoration and conservation.
