Berwyn/Cicero, Ill.–Morton High School announced its Mustangs Boys Soccer team has published its 2015 season schedule with the varsity squad’s 12 seniors featured on 11×17 color posters.
The soccer players pictured are: Billy Castro #1, Leo Delgado #27, Pavel Garcia #47, Jose Gonzalez #21, Edwin Ibarra #5, Ricky Ledezma #3, Diego Lopez #23, Rigo Lozano #20, José Moreno #19, Juan Salas #2, Danny Sanchez #17, and Christian Tovar #15. The team is coached by Varsity Head Coach Mike Caruso and Assistant Coach Jim Bageanis.
Graphic arts student Matthew Vega (Class of 2016) developed the final printed design in his production class at Morton West.
“It was a great pleasure to design the soccer poster,” Vega said. “It’s my last year here (at Morton). I want to start off strong and finish strong.”
Students have photographed, designed and printed the posters for distribution in the schools and the community. The program started last year under the supervision of graphic arts teacher Mike Battistoni. Vega won two awards for his 2015 Boys Rugby poster design at competitions last spring hosted by Triton College and Harper College.
The Athletics & Activities Department plans to release posters for Boys Soccer, Girls Volleyball, Wrestling, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Girls Soccer, Rugby and the Band programs during the 2015-2016 school year. All will be designed and printed by the Morton West Graphic Arts production classes, with sponsorship from Morton Booster Club, Morton Music Parents Association and the Rugby Club.
Battistoni said the sports schedule project has been completely integrated into the advanced graphic arts curriculum. Students have learned a great deal about planning, scheduling and production in the project’s second year.
“Matthew has been a three-year student of mine and it’s wonderful to see him grown into a great designer and young man,” Battistoni said. “He currently works with administrators, principals and staff on multiple designs.” The project has brought graphic arts students and athletes together, Battistoni noted.
“The year has only begun, and there is plenty more to come from Morton West Graphic Arts,” Vega promised.
